People channel their emotions many different ways. For me, writing is the best, but it’s not the only way. I am not always able to wrangle my emotions enough to sit down and focus my energy on writing. That is where music comes in – especially EDM.

Whether I’m happy or sad, empowered or confused, grief-stricken or content, EDM can help me express that. We are taught to hold our emotions within, that some emotions need to be quiet – but all emotions are loud. They all affect the way the beat of your heart feels in your chest, they consume your mind and body, causing a need for a way to release them. Whether you dance to the beat, or simply listen and let the beat focus you, EDM connects what you are thinking and feeling, and allows you to let it out. After you let it out, you can enjoy the song again and again just for the joy of dancing.

Most of the EDM I listen to has lyrics, as well. Across all genres, a song’s lyrics are fairly open to interpretation, but none more so than in EDM. One person’s happy dance song can be another’s way to release their pain.

Even if you don’t enjoy electronic dance music, music is a great way to allow yourself to feel what you may have been holding back. Below, I’m sharing songs that I connect with certain emotions – feel free to share your own in the comments.
